Publication Updates for Sherry Soule

🕵️‍♂️✨ Hello friends and fellow booklovers!❤️📖

As we approach the end of February 2024, I'm looking forward to spending a peaceful weekend writing and hanging out with my kids and mom, along with our beloved furry companions.

Onto updates about my publications…

I know some of you are wondering why I publish so infrequently. It took me almost two years to publish, Poison Pen, the sequel to Booked For Murder. The truth is, I started ghostwriting to support myself and my family, so I actually wrote 9 books this year, but only managed to write 1 book for myself. Ghostwriting and book cover design help pay my bills for now.

But you know what? I’m hoping to flip that around to making a living at what I love doing—writing my own books. One way you can help to do that, and I'd be ever so grateful if you can, is to post about my books on your social media accounts, leave reviews, and share your love of reading with others.

Those simple acts will help any author to boost their sales and be able to write more books. The one book I did finish this year is for my new semi-secret romance pen name, which I shared only with you in my last newsletter. I haven’t publicly announced it yet and I’m not sure when I will, if ever.

Anyhoo, so what’s up for 2024, you may wonder.

Well, my friends, I plan to write another book under the semi-secret pen name, and the sequel to Hexes and Hijinks. I had a dream about writing it and I rarely dream about my writing, so I’m taking it as a sign that that’s the book I need to write next.

Then I will probably write the sequel to Shadow Magic. That book was fun to write and I’m not sure if it’s more urban fantasy with romance or a paranormal romance. LOL If you’ve read it, let me know what you think.

Also, in 2024 I plan to build my ARC team. If you don’t know what this is, it’s a Facebook group where the members will get exclusive content and get to read advanced reader copies of my books before they are published in exchange for an honest review posted on social media and/or online, like Amazon.

If you want to join my group, you can visit this link.

I have also updated a few of my book covers, like the Bewitching Books Mystery series, and I hope you like the new branding. And look for the sequel to Hexes and Hijinks, Sit, Stay, Spook in 2025 and other books that I hope to publish.

Wishing each and every one of you happy reading!

Warmest regards,

Paranormal Cozy Reads

❤️📖 Do you ever find yourself flipping through a book, only to realize you've been spellbound by a tale of ghosts, goblins, or perhaps a charming witch solving the most bewildering of mysteries?

Well, welcome to my world! 📚✨

I love indulging in paranormal reads and cozy mysteries. There's something about diving into the unknown, with a sprinkle of spine-tingling suspense and a dollop of humor, that just captivates me.

And let's not forget the cherry on top: strong, fearless heroines who don't just face the darkness but salsa on the graves of their enemies, tracking down criminals and battling evil forces with a wit sharper than a vampire's fangs.

These heroines, much like the ones I conjure up in my own novels, are not just characters; they're powerful, they're relentless, and they sure as heck don't need a knight in shining armor to save the day. They ARE the knights, armed with nothing but their courage, a touch of magic, and perhaps a sarcastic sidekick. 🗡️🔮

Why do I love these stories, you ask? Because they whisk me away to a world where anything is possible, where every turn of the page is like a journey through haunted mansions, teamed up with sassy witches, and snarky, sexy werewolves.

😉 After all, who doesn't love a good mystery solved with a bit of sass, magic, and supernatural flair? 🌙🔍

Who's your favorite paranormal heroine? Let me know in the comments. ❤️📖

Living a Postivie Writer's Life!

Today I’m feeling somewhat empowered and I think it’s because I've made some awesome new friends and I’m feeling encouraged. I feel positive and happy and lighter this morning. But I know some of you are going through your own personal-struggles, so this post is for you…

https://www.amazon.com/default/e/B0104Y33KK

Sometimes we all need to remind ourselves of our own inner-strength. That each one of us has the courage and determination to overcome any difficulties. Those are NOT what define us. Those are what show us how truly amazing and strong we are even when we think we’re not going to make it to the other side. That we will get through the hard times, and that for whatever reason, I think we were meant to go through these struggles and heartaches.

Like the saying, “Tough times never last, but tough people do…” You are that tough person.

Maybe surviving the difficult times in our lives is so that we can have more empathy for others, or be able to help someone else with compassion and love who is suffering from a similar situation, and we can relate because we’ve been through it.

Personally, I’ve been through a lot of hardship in my own life: health issues, my daughter’s illness, divorce, depression/anxiety, financial worries, loss of jobs (I got laid off from 3 jobs within a 2 year period) and yeah, now I have ghostly problems to deal with, but I know in my heart that I’ll get through this, too.

Perhaps some of your own personal struggles will even help you become a better writer and create more sympathetic characters.

Here are a few quotes to brighten your day and lift your spirits. Have a fabulous week!

“You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” ~A.A. Mine, Author/Poet

“Optimism is a happiness magnet. If you stay positive good things and good people will be drawn to you.” ~Mary Lou Retton, Gymnast

THE INDIE AUTHOR JOURNEY

Actually, I think "My Journey to Publication" might have been a better title for this post...

When I was growing up, the only thing I ever dreamed about was being a professional writer. Today Amazon sent me an email inviting me to create an author page. This probably sounds lame to some people, but it’s an exciting step to me. My own official author page! I realize for self-published and indie authors that it’s an on-going struggle to get your books out into the world, and hopefully make some money in the process.
Like every writer, I am incredibly passionate about my work. The main reason I write is because I love to do it. Not for the money. No, because I love creating characters. I love crafting suspense. And I love telling stories—my kind of stories.
Writing has always been my true passion. This was what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to publish novels. I dreamed of being a professional author since I was seven years old, and I enjoy writing both adult and young adult tales.
Best-selling author, Tracy Hickman was quoted as saying, “Don’t seek to be published, seek to be read.”
Simple words. Great advice. It made so much sense. Write for your readers. Write what you love. Write every day and don’t give up.
Our dreams should give us wings. Let us fly. Soar above the clouds. And we should never, ever have to look down. Right?
Being a voracious reader all of my life, I believe my writing style differs from the other young adult paranormals being published; because my stories tend to have elements of chilling suspense weaved into the plot. Nor are my stories always focused primarily on “love.” But there is a lot of kissing!
Yet I do write about people who fall in love under unusual circumstances. Not because I like a conventional happy ending—no, I write about love because I believe it’s the strongest human emotion we possess. And sometimes my character’s choices don’t get them a happy ending. Sometimes the endings are surprising. Sometimes bittersweet. Sometimes they end with a cliffhanger. But I hope they are never boring or too predictable.
How did I start?
Well, like I said, I’ve been writing since I was seven. I’ve written a lot of books over the years. Yeah, a lot of bad books, too. I went to college, but mostly took creative writing and English classes. I couldn’t go full-time because I had a family to look after, but I did take various writing courses for the past ten years.
To be honest, I’ve tried three times in my life to find a literary agent, aka the gatekeepers to the publishing world, without success. I’ve even had a few prominent agencies request my work. Looking back, I know what I did wrong. I didn’t have any critique partners. The manuscript wasn’t tightened up and polished. I didn’t hire a freelance editor. I thought it was good. Well, it sucked. Hence, the multiple rejections. Which also sucked.
I’d like to think I’ve learned a lot since then. I hope I have.
The turning point in my life came when, like so many people across the United States, I lost my job. I feel into a deep, dark depression. To escape my utter hopelessness and to be productive, I decided to try writing again. I rewrote an old story that I still believed in, but knew it still needed some major revision. Maybe this was a sign from God to try to get published after all these years. I wrote every day for months, then started query agents and editors again. No luck. More rejections.
I worked part-time and kept writing. I started editing a manuscript that I wrote about nine years ago called, “IMMORTAL ECLIPSE.” I did some freelance developmental editing to pay the rent. Then I was laid off again and after a few months, my unemployment ended. I was scared. No job. No money in my checking account and my savings account had been closed by my bank. Zero funds.
Time to freak out. I was a single mother with two young children to support. But no way to support them. Then I discovered that my seven-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a severe and very rare disease. The medical bills began to mount up. I needed money.
In my heart, I still didn’t want to give up on my dream. It was all I had left to encourage me…
Once I gave up the idea of a book deal with a New York publishing house and finding an über agent that loved my work, I decided to look into indie publishers. Then I read about Amanda Hocking’s success story on her blog. I was impressed and awed. She had taken a chance, so I decided to self-publish one of my early novels. Why not? I talked it over with my family—who agreed. I had nothing to lose. And since I was out of a job, I had time to promote my work.
Then some of my family members announced that they wanted to start an online publishing company. And guess what? I was the first to sign with them. Sure, they’re medium but everyone has to start somewhere. So, they didn’t mind when I wanted to hire my own cover artist.
Going Indie is a scary endeavor. On occasion things don’t work out. Books don’t sell. The genre dead ends. Bad timing. Worse luck.
But indie authors can find a medium amount of success due to the book blogging community, which is so incredibly supportive. And I sincerely thank the book reviewers who have embraced and heartily praised my novels.
Although, I may never reach the success of other self-published or indie authors, I won’t look back at my life someday with regret. At least I’ll know I tried, and that’s something, right? You only fail if you never try…
“If you’re waiting for the universe to provide for you, I’ve got a feeling you’re going to wait a long time. If you know what you want, then my advice is to confidently take the necessary steps and go get it.” – Bryan Hutchinson
So, now I need to get back to editing and writing new stories. No reason to let these manuscripts sit on my hard-drive. Maybe someone will enjoy reading them. Maybe not. Maybe I’ll keep dreaming and hoping, and someday those hopes and dreams will come true. Maybe not.

But what good are dreams if you don’t try to make them come true? What good is trying to follow your heart if those aspirations can’t be turned into reality?

Never let someone else put limits on your goals or hinder your own personal dreams. I know, I won’t…

Sherry Soule's Writing Process

A lot of people ask me about my writing process, so today I’m going to chat about it. This post may help some of you and others may think I’m a tad wacky. Although, the latter might be true…

Anyhoo, here’s my method, and this advice is good for all those indie authors  or unpublished writers just starting out. Please take it to heart!!

First off, I use Word 2010 to create my masterpieces (I can call them that if I want to!) and I should mention that I also use some writing software. For me it takes about 4 to 6 months to finish a novel.

Once I finish a second draft,  I find at least 2 beta readers that I can convince to read my drivel. With their feedback, I revise. If I get writers block or can’t think of a clever way to describe something. I go to Internet and read online poetry. Much better. Now I’m full of pretty prose and ideas. Revise again. I’ll continually do this until the story is finished.

Next I put each chapter into the AutoCrit Wizard. Can’t say enough about this amazing software. It catches a lot of overused words and phrases, passive and telling words, info-dumps, dialogue tags, etc. Okay, so after I paste in my chapter and go through each tab, I revise the text. Then I paste it into the Wizard a second time to make sure I’ve successfully reduced the problem areas.

When I finish that, I upload the entire manuscript into a different software program that I equally love. It is Serenity Software and it’s awesome. It finds clichés, redundant phrases, spelling errors, and offers alternatives, which is great, and suggestions on polishing up wordy areas. (It is worth it for the redundant phrase finder alone.) Then I save the report and do a search for all of the redundant phrases in my MS. Sometimes the report can be 25 to 50 pages long. But I go through and revise them all. This takes about two to three days.

Now it is time for my Crit Partners to review my work. With my CPs, I usually exchange chapters at a pretty fast rate. Two a week.

When I’m done exchanging chapters with my CPs, I start listening to the entire manuscript read out loud on my computer. If I catch an error, typo or a missing word, I pause the program and then fix the problem. Sometimes I’ll re-listen to a scene of dialogue several times until it flows smoothly before moving onto the next section of text. A very tedious chore, but one I cannot recommend highly enough to new writers. As a freelance editor, I always advise my clients to do this, and I can always tell when they have not. Plus, it will turn your dialogue into magic…

Once all of the above is completed, I hire a freelance developmental editor to critique the MS. After the editor had completed their critique and send it back to me, I revise again. I cannot stress enough how important it is for indie authors to hire professional editors to review your work BEFORE you publish.

After I finish my final revisions, I will listen to the entire story read out loud on my computer.

Then, drum roll please…the MS is ready for publication.

So the next time someone says to you, “So, you just sit home and write?” Please smack them upside the head once for me. Not only is writing a long process, its damn hard work to get a well-crafted manuscript ready to be viewed by the public.
